Self-Adhesive Labels: What Are They?

Labels manufactured with a certain kind of adhesive called a "self adhesive" or "pressure sensitive adhesive" are referred to as self adhesive labels. A pressure sensitive adhesive is one that can be successfully applied with just a finger or thumb's pressure and is tacky (sticky) at room temperature.

What Kinds Of Self-Adhesive Labels Are Available?

Self-adhesive labels can be found in a variety of shapes, such as sheets (like our A4 labels), rolls (where the labels are on a continuous backing sheet that is looped around a central core), and fan-fold labels (also carried on a continuous backing sheet but one that is perforated and then folded back and forth along these perforations). While some are designed to be printed on, others are simply meant to be left blank or scrawled.

Self adhesive labels typically consist of three layers: a top layer called the face material, a middle layer called the adhesive, and a bottom layer called the adhesive (the Backing Sheet). To create the actual "label," the face material and adhesive separate from the backing sheet. Self-adhesive labels could include extra layers to help create a specific appearance or carry out a specific purpose.

Orianaa Decorpack has decided to focus on self adhesive A4 sheets of labels that are intended for use with common desktop laser and inkjet printers.

Why Are There So Many Options Available?

A4 labels can be used for countless different label applications. To ensure that the labels can develop and maintain a sticky connection under the particular circumstances and requirements of that particular application, different applications call for specific sizes, materials, and/or adhesives.

As a result, even though we "specialise" in a single kind of self adhesive label, we still have a LOT of choices. We want every one of our customers to be able to discover a solution that works for their application, thus our product line comprises more than 100 label sizes in more than 30 material/adhesive combinations.

Label Dimensions

We provide labels in "standard" sizes. These sizes were created by cutting an A4 sheet into a certain number of labels, leaving as little waste material as possible around and between the labels. They are based on the proportions of an A4 sheet. We don't offer customised sizes; to get customised label sizes, get in touch with a label manufacturer.

Paper labels are a straightforward (and cost-effective) choice appropriate for common applications. For more demanding applications, such as those needing translucent labels, waterproof labels, or asset/security labels, synthetic labels offer specialised qualities.

The printing processes used by various printers are VERY dissimilar. Inks are dispersed onto a surface using inkjet printers, where they are partially absorbed before setting. Toner, a dry powder, is adhered to a surface by laser printers using heat (and pressure). Some materials work best with a specific printing technique (others suit both). In order to give our customers the finest print quality, we offer both laser and inkjet labels.

Labels that are coloured, transparent, and glossy or matte.

The way you look is important to many customers. So, in addition to gloss (bright and shiny) and matt (dark and matte) finishes, we offer options for coloured labels, transparent labels, and other label types (dull and flat).

Adhesives that are Permanent, Removable, and Special.

Both removable and permanent pressure sensitive adhesives are available. The former provide tenacious adhesive bonds that make label removal challenging. The latter provide adhesive bonds that maintain labels in place while they are required before they are quickly and thoroughly removed (without damaging the surface or leaving behind adhesive residue). We offer both permanent and repositionable labels in addition to specialised adhesives made for certain uses. For instance, our high-tack adhesives (which form solid adhesive bonds even on odd materials and/or curved surfaces), marine adhesives (for outdoor applications), VOID adhesives (for security labels), deep freeze adhesives (for items used or stored in freezer conditions), water wash off adhesives (for reusable containers), and super removable adhesives (for temporarily labelling delicate items).
